Jewels, Frocks of Iconic New York Women to Go on Display

Some of the the most stunning couture of the 20th Century is going on display in time for Fashion Week -- a nod to the unforgettable style of 80 prominent New York women.

Co-presented with the National Jewelry Institute, the exhibit "Notorious and Notable: 20th Century Women of Style" opens Tuesday, Sept. 14 at the Museum of the City of New York.

The exhibit displays the frocks and jewelry of iconic New York women, including socialites and political figures like Mrs. Cornelius Whitney Vanderbilt, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Babe Paley, to media star Barbara Walters, singer Lena Horne, and actress Lauren Bacall.

The exhibition features a virtual runway of original attire -- much of it created by the most important designers of their times -- and an impressive selection of jewelry crafted from the dawn of the 20th century to its close, a press release said.

Among the displays: a red early 20th Century Balenciaga number worn by Gentleman Prefer Blondes writer Anita Loos and a 1985 hot-pink Yves Saint Laurent gown with a plunging neckline made for Oscar de la Renta’s wife, Annette.

The exhibit runs through January 3, 2011.
