Jazz-Age Dance Party @ Governors Island

After watching "How-To" clips on YouTube and enduring tortuous hours of "Dancing with the Stars," we think we've mastered the Charleston.

There's only one place we could really show off our new moves, without looking like a freak, and that's at the Jazz Age Dance Party at Governors Island this weekend.

For a few magical hours Governors Island will transform into a 1920's dream in which everyone actually dresses up! Imagine that, a park outing in flapper dresses, tailored slacks and straw hats.

Michael Arenella and the Dreamland Orchestra will provide the ambiance with their old-time jazz numbers.

Arenella, a transplant of Georgia and huge Roaring '20s aficionado since he was kid (must be an old soul), also doubles as a composer having written for a string quartet and a large chamber orchestra.

His style, inspired by Claude Debussy and Bix Beiderbecke, mixes between Baroque through to Impressionism, helping him create his own version of '20s dance music. And just in case you haven't the slightest clue on how to do the Foxtrot or the Charleston, there will be instructors showing you how people got their groove on back in the day.

The fun starts at 11 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday. Admission is $7 in advance and $10 day-of.
