Is Fast-Food Oatmeal Really Oatmeal?

Oatmeal is a staple in any nutritious diet, but can it still be called healthy when it hits 290 calories and 32 grams of sugar a pop?

Not so much, says Mark Bittman in his New York Times blog. Especially when a serving packs in more calories and sugar than a regular 2-oz. Snickers bar (which clocks in at 270 calories and 29 grams of sugar).

Bittman's beef is with McDonald's claims that their Fruit and Maple Oatmeal as "healthy."

"A more accurate description than '100% natural whole-grain oats,' 'plump raisins,' 'sweet cranberries,' and 'crisp fresh apples' would be 'oats, sugar, sweetened dried fruit, cream and 11 weird ingredients you would never keep in your kitchen,'" writes Bittman.

A company spokesperson did respond to a query from Bittman to point out that the oatmeal is entirely cutomizable, and that customers can order without the light cream, brown  sugar and fruit.
