Just two days after her sold-out benefit with Sonic Youth et al. for earthquake relief in Japan at Columbia University’s Miller Theatre this Sunday, Yoko Ono heads downtown to do another star-studded concert for the same cause.
For a night at (Le) Poisson Rouge that she’s calling "To Japan With Love," the 78-year-old artist/musician/avant-garde enigma has tapped Patti Smith, Tony Shanahan, Antony of Antony and the Johnsons and Cibo Matto, and will be playing with her own Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band, led by her son Sean and featuring the likes of guitar god Nels Cline. Just the idea of Ono and Smith rocking out at a tiny club in the village for a good cause has us feeling all 1970s, in a very good way. The tickets may be $100, but you’re getting a whole lot of music (much of it improvised, as is Ono’s way) and charisma for your money, not to mention the chance to do good.
