This may be 2009’s best antidote to the incessant drone of seasonal music: On December 8, singer-songwriter Rosanne Cash, local acoustic folkie (and ex-Soul Coughing member) Mike Doughty and Providence’s Americana trio the Low Anthem come to the New York Society for Ethical Culture for a night of music to benefit NYC’s non-commercial public radio station WFUV.
Rosanne Cash just released “The List”, interpreting the songs papa Johnny considered the most essential in the American songbook. Ben Knox Miller, jazz bassist Jeff Prystowsky and classical composer Jocie Adams, a.k.a. the Low Anthem, just put out their third CD, Oh My God, Charlie Darwin, to raves. And Mike Doughty’s Sad Man Happy Man keeps him fusing every genre imaginable (including spoken word). It should be a night of nothing less than rootsy music, holiday-tinged or otherwise.
Which you’ll need after soldiering through the umpteenth boy-band version of “The Little Drummer Boy” in line at Duane Reade.
