Hot Ticket: Lyle Lovett & John Hiatt @ Beacon 1/22

We’ve always had a soft spot for the wildly idiosyncratic Lyle Lovett, his big band and his crazy, sideburn-less hairdo. Frequent tourmates Lovett and John Hiatt come to the Beacon Theatre as part of Lovett’s 24-city winter tour; they’ll play cozy acoustic sets, alternating songs from their respective catalogs, blending country, Texas swing, jazz, folk, gospel and blues. From the press release:

On the January and February dates [Lovett] teams up with longtime friend and frequent tour mate John Hiatt for intimate acoustic shows that will feature the artists performing onstage together and alternating songs from throughout their careers.  Lovett and Hiatt have toured together numerous times since 1989.

"The shows are very spontaneous; no two are alike,” said Lovett.  "It gives our audiences a chance to see a side of us they don't always see."

Reviewing a previous Lovett/Hiatt performance, the Tampa Tribune wrote, "the two-hour plus performance was rocking and soulful, touching and hilarious.”  The Salt Lake Tribune focused on their “playful camaraderie” as they “swap stories and songs while giving insight to what makes them who they are.”

The 2011 dates continue Lovett’s busy 2010 schedule. He kicked it off with an international tour, which included a series of European dates with Hiatt, as well as his first tour of Australia with his acoustic band. Returning to the U.S., he reunited with his stellar Large Band for concerts in the summer and fall.

Highlights of the year included:  taping the final Austin City Limits episode (airdate January 29, 2011) at the show’s 36-year home before the legendary PBS  program moves to its new location, singing the national anthem at Game 4 of the World Series, performing his songs with the Kansas City Symphony, honoring Kris Kristofferson at the Leadership Music's Dale Franklin Award gala with a rousing rendition of "Me and Bobby McGee" and sharing the Lincoln Center stage in New York with Stevie Wonder, John Mellencamp and Emmylou Harris to benefit Paul Newman’s Hole in the Wall Camps.

An Acoustic Evening with Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt, Saturday, January 22, 2011, 8PM at the Beacon Theatre, 2124 Broadway; 212-465-6500. Tickets from $90, available via Ticketmaster.
