Hot Band Alert: The Little Death

Dirty, gritty, seriously old-school soul from a hometown band with a not-so-secret secret (it’s Moby’s side project)

Who: Vocalist Laura Dawn, with Daron Murphy, Aaron A. Brooks, and – oh yeah – Moby, playing bass and guitar. (Plus backing harmonies from Jamie Rae and Cherie Martorana, a.k.a. The Death Threats) The two-year-and-change-old band has played with Lou Reed at SXSW, headlined at jolly sleazehole The Box, and generally cut a sultry swath across the music scene with a genre that rarely gets cred in NYC: white-girl truckstop juke joint soul.

What they sound like: Laura Dawn sounds like she went on a whiskey bender on the L.E.S. and woke up in 1962 Memphis – so a little Janis Joplin, Dusty Springfield (in her angrier moments), and early Tina Turner, with a soupcon of Blondie.

Where they hail from: New York City

Spin this: “That Bone” “If You Don’t Love Me,” both on MySpace

Where to hear them live: Catch the Little Death at Mercury Lounge tonight at 9PM for a paltry $10. See them before their debut album – recorded direct to tape in a single take, because they’re old-school like that – drops on September 1 and ticket price goes up. More information here.
