Harlem Stage Announces Spring 2011 Shows

Based in one of New York’s liveliest landmarks (and that’s saying something), the Harlem Stage program regularly offers concerts, film screenings, and dance events intended to highlight the neighborhood’s cultural history.

Today, curators announced their Spring 2011 roster of shows and, happily, they’ve ratcheted up the music this time.

Located at the Gatehouse, a restored 19th century operations center for the Croton Aqueduct water system, the Harlem Stage program brings a new focus to dance, both in the modern turntablism of Rich Medina and in revived rent party-style shindigs honoring jazz’s greats. We’re most excited about:

Cabaret Chocolat – February 12
Tamar-kali’s avant-garde classical Psychochamber Ensemble backs a whirlwind of burlesque song and dance

Marcus Strickland Quartet w/The Tap Messengers of New York - March 11
One of the West Village’s favorite saxophonists/bandleaders performs their dizzying blend of world, hip-hop, and jazz…opened by tap dancers inspired by Art Blakey.

Lil’ Ricky’s Harlem: A Dance Party with Rich Medina - April 15
DJ Rich Medina, famed for his local APT club residency, spins funk, Afrobeat, and soul.

The Fats Waller Dance Party - May 13-14

Pianist Jason Moran and singer/multi-instrumentalist Meshell Ndegeocello have both delivered staggering sets recently downtown. Now they honor the stride piano legacy of Fats Waller with a contemporary spin.

Ben Williams & Sound Effect – June 14
Experimental bassist Ben Williams leads his Sound Effect quintet in a stride jazz soiree.
