This one has been developing for a while, but now it's official: monument theft has become a problem in Williamsburg and Greenpoint. Specifically, there's been a rash of theft of plaques on monuments that can be sold for scrap, with six Burg and Greenpoint monuments losing them in the last month. "Cops have beefed up patrols around churches and small parks in the neighborhoods after bronze and brass plaques honoring church parishioners and 9/11 and World War II heroes were stolen."
