Free Golf Instruction for NYC Kids

We may be halfway through summer but there's still plenty of time to take advantage of amazing seasonal activities, especially for kids.

In a city scarce on green space, the CityParks Golf program manages to convert open spaces into putting greens, bringing golf instruction to city kids who may not otherwise get a chance to get acquainted with the sport.

So far, over 12,000 children ages five to 16 have taken advantage of the program, according to the CityParks Foundation. Some have even gotten so invested that they've gone on to play on their high school teams and in tournaments -- like Queens teenager Sarah Soo-Hoo, who was recently selected to attend the PGA's prestigious Ryder Cup Junior Golf Academy for seven days of intensive training.

Only one boy and girl from each section of the PGA throughout the country are selected to attend the training session at the PGA Center for Golf Learning and Performance in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Soo-Hoo played on CityParks Junior Golf Academy Team at CityParks Junior Golf Center in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, this summer before she was selected.

"By providing free use of equipment and professional instruction, CPF teaches more than just basics – they instill confidence, focus, teamwork and sportsmanship," CPF said in a press release. "The program gives young people a chance to improve their skills and ultimately try out for the CityParks Intermediate Program and Junior Golf Academy, specialized programs for dedicated golfers held at CityParks Junior Golf Center."
