Help New Yorkers Fight Hunger

The 2011 Food Network New York City Wine & Food Festival will soon be here, benefiting food banks and hunger program.

Celebrities, including David Bouley, Sandra Lee and Whoopi Goldberg, will host the more than 135 events. Everything from pancake parties to sushi-rolling classes are on the schedule.

The proceeds from the festival -- Sept. 29 to Oct. 2 -- go to the Food Bank for New York and Share Our Strength, a national nonprofit that aims to end childhood hunger in the U.S.

The festival is one of the Food Bank’s largest fundraisers, making this an important event for the 1.5 million New Yorkers who rely increasingly on its 1,000 community-based programs.

The latest Census reveals that the nation’s median household income fell 2 percent since 2009.

Last year the festival raised more than $1.2 million for hunger-relief, enabling the food bank to provide more than three million meals in the city.
