Explosion Destroys Long Island Home

Family escaped unharmed before house blew up

An explosion has destroyed a Long Island house, and the family inside has escaped unscathed.

The two-story Amityville home was leveled in the Sunday explosion. Shards of wood and furniture were scattered over the house's lawn and driveway. One car was crushed by the home's roof.

Rich Brown says most of his belongings were destroyed but he feels grateful that he, his girlfriend and his two children escaped. He says he feels lucky the explosion happened during the day and not while they were all asleep.

Neighbors reported hearing a loud boom and seeing a fireball.
