Eating Restaurant Week: Toloache

What to eat during Summer Restaurant Week at this modern-takes-on Mexican in Times Square

Summer Restaurant Week is on! Through July 31, out of the 250+ eateries participating, we bring you a crib sheet to our favorites. Toloache
251 West 50th Street near Broadway, 212-581-1818;

Why: Don’t be put off by the admitted gimmickry (like grasshopper tacos and chocolate margaritas) -- Toloache is that food-scene rarity: good food within a stone’s throw of the TKTS booth. Chef-partner Julian Medina serves up fresh neo-Mexican dishes, roasts his own suckling pig, and pours some of the most blinding margaritas in mid-Manhattan (try the frozen tamarind raspado).

What to order off the RW menu: Grilled watermelon with avocado and lime vinaigrette caught our eye on the lunch menu; follow it with a carnitas enchilada: roast pork, tequila-chile ancho salsa, and pickled radish. At dinner, try the tacos stuffed with brisket braised in Negra Modelo beer, then go lighter with adobo-marinated tilapia sided by jicama cabbage slaw. For dessert at either meal: cheesecake made with cajeta (a caramel-like Mexican sauce made with goat’s milk), drowning in mescal sauce. (See the full menu here.)

During Restaurant Week, lunch at participating establishments is $24.07, dinner $35.00. Reserve early.
