East Harlem Hunted for New Academic Building

At least one institution is bullish on East Harlem, but it's not a real estate developer. It's Hunter College, which is looking to move its School of Social Work to a new building it wants to construct on Third Avenue from 118th Street to 119th Street, now home to a vacant lot and low-rise commercial buildings. The Times reports the complicated deal involves selling the school's tower at East 79th Street and Lexington Avenue to developer the Brodsky Organization to finance the move and new building, designed by Cooper, Robertson & Partners. Brodsky would redevelop the 79th Street site, but not before Hunter's new $135 million school building is finished. The whole shebang is subject to approval by the City Planning Commission, but at least East Harlem has a big project to discuss that's not the new Target.
