Could Gaga Do Winehouse Justice?

Music nerds felt a collective "weird" yesterday at the news Lady Gaga wants to play Amy Winehouse in a biopic. Besides how involved the stage moms seemed in the original, apparently inaccurate story, something just didn't jive. Anyway, the news now is that Mitch Winehouse, Amy's dad, posted on Twitter that he never said Gaga was game for the part. We should have known straight away this was a no-go.

They Never Met

It's true. Even though they've both won a bevy of Grammys and were celebrated in basically the same circles of acclaim, the two vocalists never met. What more need you say? Acting is all about the idiosyncrasies. The classic example: Johnny Depp basically following Hunter Thompson around for the last 15 years of his life. Depp's performance of was so spot-on he basically got two films out of it.

The Celebrity

"Moonstruck" made sense because Cher came up through her variety show. How could we possibly divorce Gaga from her sheer Gaga-ness. Even when I look at her ultra-glam shots, all I can think of is her saying, "You can do it baby!" We could never buy it.

The Ever Humble Mama Monster

"You know, you can't have it both ways," Gaga told the ladies of "The View" after Amy's death.  "You can't enjoy listening to someone sing sad songs about the blues and heartbreak and then not expect them to be truly heartbroken." So how could we expect someone as positive as you to act out Amy's sorrow?

Pop Vs. Blues

Do the ladies' styles vibe? Gaga's one of the reigning queens of pop, Winehouse the erstwhile champion of soul -- would Gaga be able to belt a convincing "Rehab?" We're looking for accuracy here, not interpretation. Then again, before Gaga was famous she was a little more akin to the roots of Winehouse's music:

The Accent

Only the music survives: 1-4, against this casting.

If Cee-Lo plays Raekwon's dad and Gaga plays Winehouse, will the internet implode?
