Planes Keep Turning the Wrong Way at Newark Airport

Controllers say Newark takeoff pattern is problematic

Air traffic controllers at Newark Liberty Airport say that months after a new takeoff pattern was put in place, some planes continue to turn in the wrong direction.

They say three planes flew the wrong way leaving Newark Liberty International Airport this Monday, including one that was operated by the Federal Aviation Administration.

The FAA established the new takeoff patterns last December to help ease congestion in the New York metropolitan area.

But controllers say there have been more than 20 instances since then where planes turned the wrong way. Several incidents in May prompted the FAA to issue a computerized notice to all pilots that is kept in every cockpit.

The FAA did not comment on Thursday.
