Stores up and down the boardwallk at Coney Island have shiny brand new "For Lease" signs and tenants got eviction notices mixed in with their Christmas cards yesterday, according to reports on Gowanus Lounge. Details are hazy, because among other things, as Gowanus says, "It's Christmas Eve." The most solid information came in the form of a call from Lola Staar (aka Coney activist and shopowner Diana Carlin), who reported that folks were being evicted. But then there are rumors of new leases and rents tripling. The one thing that is certain is that Coney Island got a lump of coal this morning, and the Astroland Rocket is still looking for a home.
