Cash Value Expiring For NJ Turnpike Tokens

Officials: 200,000 tokens turned in already

New Jersey's parkway token is about to become useless.

But you do have one last chance to turn those tokens into legal tender.

Until 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, you can cash them in at the turnpike offices in Woodbridge, just off the Turnpike's Exit 11.

WNBC's cameras were rolling Tuesday as folks from near and far brought them in by coffee cans, plastic bags and even money bags too heavy for a 6-year-old.

Beginning Jan. 1, parkway toll booths will only accept cash coins or E-ZPass.

Officials said some have brought in thousands of the tokens. Some buy them off eBay, paying between 15 and 19 cents, and redeeming each for 33 cents.

Nearly 200,000 have been turned in so far, but state officials estimate there are millions still out there.
