Calling All Designers!

Gen Art launches its search for the next great international talent.

Do you think you have what it takes to be a high-powered fashion designer? Do you know the difference between a blind hem stitch and a Hong Kong finish? Do you measure twice and cut once?

Well, if you think you're an as-yet-undiscovered talent, you should be advised that Gen Art is taking submissions for its International Design Competition starting this Monday, January 19. Now, we know it's a holiday here in the USA—which might not have been the best call on their part—but eff you, America, it's an international competition.

The competition is broken down into several categories—including eveningwear, ready-to-wear, menswear, accessories, and avant-garde (which is kind of hard to describe, we'd bet)—and the winner in each category will receive a whopping $5,000 check as an award for Design Excellence. So that's plenty of sewing machines, PR interns, and takeout lunches for any designer who wins it.

To be eligible, you have to either be a student designer or have less than seven years' worth of design experience (designing under your own name), which cuts a pretty wide circle of talent. Fabsugar even wrote that some sources (aka insiders at WWD) have reported that the competitions have helped the careers of top design talent like Peter Som and the ladies of Rodarte.
