Big Toll Brothers Gowanus Plan Takes Some Heavy Flak

The big Toll Brothers plan for a two-acre development with 447 units went in front of the local Community Board last night and came out somewhat bloodied, but ready to fight again another day. The marathon meeting, which stretched for more than three hours, ended with a vote on a motion to recommend denying the developers three variances they would need to build. (The Toll firm is looking to rezone their property ahead of the bigger Gowanus rezoning, which will be a more drawn out process.) Alas, there were too many abstentions for a decision and it will all be back for more polite discussion next month. Neighborhood concerns centered (as they have in the past) around the project's size, its impact on sewage, the nasty nature of the Gowanus itself and toxic issues on the site. Others objected to allowing the Toll project to go forward before the overall rezoning is finished. Whatever the outcome, the Community Board vote is just one part of a drawn out land use review process.
