A Sing-A-Long at the Paley Center

Fans of vampires, super heroes and group sing-a-longs gathered at the Paley Center Friday night for the first ever group sing-a-long there to Dr. Horrible's Sing-A-Long Blog. The 45-minute film by Joss Whedon and starring Neil Patrick Harris, Nathan Fillion and Felicia Day was created during the 2007–08 Writers Guild of America strike, and was a major traffic draw this summer for Hulu. The AP notes, "One of the year's biggest hits was Joss Whedon's three-part musical "Dr. Horrible's Sing-A-Long Blog" (on Hulu)."

The Sing-A-Long, led by Clinton McClung, a veteran of the Buffy sing-a-longs, went down to a packed house at the Paley Center. Audience interaction was encouraged, as attendees were given a prop bag featuring items to use during the screening. Bagged items including bubbles, a horse finger puppet, a glowstick, a fake mustache and a piece of shrubbery were all used during specific scenes in the film, as laid out before hand on event programs.

Fans of the film knew the words well, but for those who didn't, closed captioning accompanied the songs. One audience member came dressed as the lead villian, Dr. Horrible, while others died their hair and wore Dr. Horrible t-shirts. It was all quite geektastic, and despite the event only lasting an hour, it was a great start to a wintery Friday evening.

Before the screening, McClung expressed hope that the sing-a-longs would continue, pending the night's success. As a first-hand witness, i'd attest that it went well, and fans of both Whedon and Dr. Horrible can likely expect to see more group sing-a-longs come to the Paley Center in the near future.
