8/19: Barbounia's 3rd Annual Tomato Festival

Plus Toni Morrison live, and a week of Natalie Wood at the Walter Reade

STRANGE FRUIT: Park Ave. South’s Mediterranean Barbounia restaurant brings you twelve days of summery goodness with its 3rd Annual Tomato Festival, spotlighting the local heirloom bounty in a three-course, $35 prix fixe (tomato-lamb ravioli! monkfish with tomato saffron!). And if that’s not enough, they’ll concoct tomato cocktails -- Dirty Thyme Tomato martini, anyone? 8/19-30. More info and menu here.

ICON: A weeklong, twelve-film retrospective kicks off today at the Walter Reade spotlighting the short but intense career of Natalie Wood. Look for special screenings with Q&As featuring Elliott Gould (her costar in “Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice”) and Marni Nixon (who provided Wood’s singing voice in “West Side Story”). 9/19-25, see full schedule here.

RARITY: Q: How often do you get to be in a room with Nobel laureate Toni Morrison? A: Almost never – which makes her foray to the Union Square Barnes & Noble tonight, coinciding with the paperback release of her novel “A Mercy,” all the more thrilling. She’ll chat with “All Things Considered”’s Michele Norris, and generally make you cower in her saintly presence. 7PM.
