5/28: “Breathless” Turns 50, Reverend Horton Heat…

…and “Top Gun” screens on the Intrepid (it’s Fleet Week!)

VERITE: Jean-Luc Godard’s groundbreaking “Breathless”—which effectively kicked off the Nouvelle Vague, created a cinematic trope out of static shots of disaffected pretty people pouting and smoking, and did more for cropped blonde hair than even “Rosemary’s Baby”-- turns 50 with a spanking new 35mm restoration (complete with revised subtitles!). See it starting today at Film Forum; schedule varies.

ALL RISE: The Reverend Horton Heat brings his greasy, country-tinged punkabilly sound to the Highline Ballroom. Expect no shortage of onstage antics and a devout level of fan worship – after all, the good Reverend has been preaching his own brand of gospel for nearly 20 years. Cracker and Miss Derringer open. 8PM.

DANGER ZONE: What could be a better Fleet Week kickoff than seeing “Top Gun” aboard an aircraft carrier? Even better, the screening marks the first in a summer of films under the stars as part of the Intrepid Summer Movie Series. Doors open at 7:30; Goose, Maverick and crew start their engines at sunset.
