SOUL SHIFT: The always-inspirational Bettye Lavette (if only for hitting her career stride nearing 60) brings her latest album “Interpretations: The British Rock Songbook”--a cluster of classic-rock covers (Pink Floyd! The Moody Blues!)--to the Highline Ballroom tonight. Also on the bill: J. Geils Band’s Peter Wolf, dabbling in Americana on his own recent work, “Midnight Souvenirs.” 8PM.

FAIR PLAY: Come by the Housing Works Bookstore Café for a first taste of the homespun, bar-band sounds of J.P., Chrissie and the Fairground Boys—a.k.a. Welsh singer-songwriter J.P. Jones, the Pretenders’ Chrissie Hynde, and members of Brit band Big Linda (we’re partial to the tune “Fairground Luck”). Opening for them is another big reason to get off the couch: Tracy Bonham, performing songs from her first full-length album in half a decade. 7PM.

VERITE: HBO Prez Sheila Nevins leads an all-star panel of filmmakers in a discussion of Why Documentaries Matter: Albert Maysles (“Grey Gardens”), D.A. Pennbaker and Chris Hegedus (responsible, together and apart, for films like “The War Room,” “Primary” and “Monterey Pop”), Alexandra Pelosi (“Journeys with George,” “Diary of a Political Tourist”) and Rosie O’Donnell (producer of the doc “A Family is a Family is a Family,” among other projects) talk about why telling the truth on film (or at ;east trying to) is more important now than ever at the 92nd Street Y. 8:15PM.
