12/29: Swayze For You: Burlesque Tribute

Plus, NOLA-style dixieland, and Patti Smith roars at Bowery Ballroom

ST PATRICK’S DAY: You don’t have to appreciate the nuances of “Roadhouse” (so underrated, people!) to applaud the oeuvre of Patrick Swayze. Downtown burlesque artists pay tribute to the late actor, his subtleties, his gyrating hips and his ever-lovin’ mullet with Swayze For You,http://www.casinoofortunecookie.com/Home.html an all-dancing, some-singing, quasi-vaudevillian show. 10:30PM.

WORD SMITH: It’s now become something of a holiday tradition: Folk-rock icon Patti Smith and her band, rocking Manhattan into the New Year. Catch her in the first of three shows on three nights at Bowery Ballroom, 8PM doors.

HOMESPUN Last time we saw singer Meschiya Lake – who’s a bit like a white, red-headed, tattooed Bessie Smith -- she was fronting the NOLA-by-way-of-Brooklyn blues-jazz outfit Loose Marbles. She performs with another excellent, freewheeling Dixieland outfit, her Little Big Horns, tonight at the cavernous Radegast Hall. 9PM.
