New York City Center concludes its Encores! Off-Center series this weekend with its staging of Andrew Lippa’s “The Wild Party.”
Performances begin tonight, and run through July 18.
Tony winner Sutton Foster (“Violet”) leads the cast, alongside her “Younger” co-star Miriam Shor (“Hedwig and the Angry Inch”) and Steven Pasquale (“The Bridges of Madison County”), who returns to “The Wild Party” -- and the role of Burrs -- after making his New York stage debut understudying the part in the original Manhattan Theater Club production of the musical.
Brandon Victor Dixon, Joaquina Kalukango, Talene Monahon and Ryan Andes round out the primary cast.
“The Wild Party” tells the story of a group of friends and lovers in one sinful night in a Manhattan apartment. It’s based on the 1928 Joseph Moncure March narrative poem of the same name. Lippa’s production, starring Idina Menzel, Brian d’Arcy James and Taye Diggs, opened in February 2000 at the MTC, where it played for 54 performances.
Coincidentally, a production of “The Wild Party” based on the same source material opened on Broadway that same season -- though it was written by Michael John LaChiusa and George C. Wolfe.
Leigh Silverman, who directed Foster on Broadway in “Violet,” directs City Center’s “The Wild Party.” “So You Think You Can Dance” choreographer Sonya Tayeh choreographs.
