Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater’s eight-time Tony-winning musical “Spring Awakening” is heading back to Broadway this fall, for an 18-week limited engagement at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre.
Previews begin Sept. 9, with an opening night set for Sept. 27 and a closing performance set for January 9, 2016.
The revival is a transfer of the critically acclaimed production from the Los Angeles-based Deaf West Theatre and the theater collective Forest of Arden, who retold the 2006 musical using a mix of hearing and deaf performers.
Deaf West used a similar approach in 2009 with “Pippin” and on Broadway in 2003, for their Tony-nominated revival of “Big River,” which starred Forest Of Arden founder Michael Arden.
Arden will direct the Broadway revival of “Spring Awakening,” as he did for the two Los Angeles productions the musical has had before the transfer. The most recent one, which ran at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills, starred Arden’s fiance Andy Mientus and Krista Rodriguez -- both alums of NBC’s “Smash.”
There is no word if Mientus and Rodriguez will transfer with the production.
Spencer Liff (“Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” TV’s “So You Think You Can Dance”) will return as choreographer.

“Spring Awakening” musicalizes and reimagines Frank Wedekin’s 1891 play, about young people navigating the excitement of discovering their own sexual desires and the confusion of living in a society that oppresses said desires.
The original production, which starred Lea Michele ( TV’s “Glee”), Jonathan Groff (TV’s “Looking”), Skylar Astin (“Pitch Perfect”) and Tony winner John Gallagher Jr., ran for 859 performances before closing in January 2009.
