Producers Planning “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” Revival

Will “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” Return to Broadway? According to The New York Times, producers Roy Furman, Jill Furman and Emanuel Azenberg are planning a revival for next spring, and courting Tony winner James Corden (“One Man, Two Guvnors”) for the leading role. “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” has found its cast. The National Theatre production of the acclaimed new play by Simon Stephens will star a slew of Broadway veterans (Ian Barford, Helen Carey, Francesca Faridany and Enid Graham, among others), while Juilliard graduate Alexander Sharp will make his Broadway debut in the lead role. “Curious Incident” begins performances at the Barrymore Theatre on Sept. 10 with an opening night slated for Oct. 5. The revival of “On the Town” has also picked its cast. Tony Yazbeck (“Gypsy”), Jay Armstrong Johnson (“Hands on a Hardbody”) and Clyde Alves (“Bullets Over Broadway”) will star as the three sailors taking up the Big Apple on their 24-hour shore leave in John Rando’s revival of the classic Broadway musical. All three actors played those roles in the Barrington Stage production in Summer 2013. “On the Town” begins performances at the Lyric Theatre on Sept. 20 with an official opening on Oct. 16. “The Realistic Joneses” will play its final Broadway performance July 6. Will Eno’s play, which stars Toni Collette, Michael C. Hall, Tracy Letts and Marisa Tomei, will have played a total of 105 performances. [More info]

The previously announced “Titanic” revival, which was planned to begin performances in the fall, has been delayed. Producers have said that the lack of the availability of a Broadway house is the reason they’ll be postponing the show. Stars will unite for the 40th anniversary of Ntozake Shange’s “for colored girls who have considered suicide when the rainbow is enuf.” Seret Scott will direct a June 16 benefit reading, with stars Tarzana Beverly, LaChanze, Adriane Lenox, Tonya Pinkins, and Lillias White participating.
