Oprah Winfrey's Next Move: Broadway?

While you were gearing up for the Olympics, here’s what was happening this week In the Wings.

Will Oprah Winfrey make her Broadway debut in “Night, Mother?” Sounds like it! The New York Times reports Oprah is in talks to star in a revival of the 1983 Pulitzer Prize-winning play, last seen on Broadway during the 2004-5 season (with Edie Falco and Brenda Blethyn). According to unnamed theater executives sourced by The Times, five-time Tony winner Audra McDonald will join Oprah in the production, which will be directed by George C. Wolfe (“Lucky Guy”). “Night, Mother” is expected to hit Broadway during the 2015-6 season, which is sooo far away but OMG WHO CARES WE’LL WAIT FOR YOU OPRAH AHHHH. [More info]

The complete cast of Harvey Fierstein’s “Casa Valentina” has been announced. Gabriel Ebert, Mare Winningham and Reed Birney are among those joining previously announced stars John Cullum and Patrick Page. Directed by Joe Mantello, “Casa Valentina” begins performances April 1 at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre. [More info]

Speaking of castings, meet the cast of “Heathers: The Musical.” Barrett Wilbert Wedd and Ryan McCartan will reprise their roles as Veronia and J.D., respectively, after playing them in the Los Angeles premiere. They’ll be joined by Elle McLemore, Jessica Keenan Wynn and Alice Lee as the Heathers. “Heathers: The Musical” begins performances at New World Stages on March 15. [More info]

“Matilda The Musical” will go out on its first North American tour in May 2015. Connecticut, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle and Dallas are among the cities they’ll be stopping by. Casting and the complete schedule will be announced at a later date, but look for those "revolting children" at a theater near you soon enough. [More info]

“Rocky” will have a daily ticket lotto where winners can watch the final fight from the stage. Hopefuls can enter for $35 tickets two hours before each performance. Seats will be within the first two rows before ticketholders are escorted onto the stage for the final 20 minutes of the show. Oh, and speaking of “Rocky,” the team behind the new musical just released a viral video that features celebrities like Robert De Niro and Whoopi Goldberg -- as well as cast members from some of Broadway’s most iconic shows -- working their way through the film’s iconic theme song. Take a look. [More info]
