Michelle Williams to Make Broadway Debut in “Cabaret”

Three-time Oscar nominee Michelle Williams will make her Broadway debut in the Roundabout Theater Co.’s revival of “Cabaret” expected in early 2014, according to reports.

Williams will play Sally Bowles opposite Alan Cumming’s deviant Master of Ceremonies, the same role the actor played in the Roundabout’s 1998 production of the Kander and Ebb musical. Though the company had not made any official announcement as of Tuesday night, the casting news was reported by both The New York Times, citing two theater executives and theater writer Brendan Lemon.

Actress Emma Stone (“The Amazing Spider-Man”) had been rumored for the role of Bowles, made famous in Bob Fosse’s 1972 film by Liza Minnelli, but deferred because of film commitments.

Williams was nominated for an Academy Award in a supporting role for “Brokeback Mountain." She was later nominated as a lead actress for “Blue Valentine” and “My Week with Marilyn.”

Director Sam Mendes (“American Beauty”) and co-director and choreographer Rob Marshall (“Chicago”), the creative team behind the coming revival, also helmed the most recent production, which featured the late Natasha Richardson as Bowles.
