Casting Set for Public's “Into the Woods”

Chip Zien joins stars Donna Murphy, Amy Adams at the Delacorte

The Public Theater this week finalized casting for “Into the Woods” with word that Chip Zien will play the “Mysterious Man” in this summer’s staging of “Into the Woods” at the Delacorte Theater, home of Shakespeare in the Park.

Zien (“Falsettos”) originated the role of the Baker in the 1987 Broadway production of the beloved Stephen Sondheim/James Lapine musical.

The “Woods” cast includes Amy Adams (The Baker’s Wife), Donna Murphy (The Witch) and Denis O’Hare (The Baker).

In the musical, a re-imagining of classic fairy tales -- among them “Jack and the Beanstalk” and “Little Reading Hood” -- a witch’s curse condemns the Baker and his wife to a life without children. They embark on a quest to find the items required to break the spell: the cow as white as milk, the cape as red as blood and so forth.

The original production played 764 performances at the Martin Beck and starred Bernadette Peters as the Witch; a 2002 revival, also directed by Lapine, had Vanessa Williams in the role.

“Into the Woods” will begin previews on July 23 and continue for five weeks through Aug. 25, with an official opening of Aug. 9. Tickets to Shakespeare in the Park are free and are distributed, two per person, at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park the day of the show.

The Public Theater will again offer free tickets through a Virtual Ticketing lottery at www.shakespeareinthepark.org on the day of the show.
