“Hardbody” Runs Out of Gas

“Hands on a Hardbody,” the musical about 10 down-on-their-luck Texans vying to win a Nissan pickup truck, will close Saturday after only 28 performances at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre.

The closing, spurred by an anemic box office, means the hard times continue for this year’s crop of best musical candidates.

By the time Tony nominations are announced April 30, only two eligible musicals will still be on the boards: “Matilda,” which opens Thursday, and “Kinky Boots,” which premiered last week.

“Hardbody” was commissioned by the La Jolla Playhouse and is based on a 1997 documentary of the same name that was created by S.R. Bindler.

The musical has a score by Amanda Green and Phish frontman Trey Anastasio. Pulitzer winner Doug Wright wrote the book. The cast includes Keith Carradine and Hunter Foster.
