“Dame at Sea” Will Sail to Broadway This Fall

“Dames at Sea,” a musical comedy about the making of a 1930s musical, will set sail to Broadway in a new production this fall.

Performances begin Sept. 24 at the Helen Hayes Theatre, with an official opening set for Oct. 22.

It will be the first Broadway production ever of the musical, which features music by Jim Wise and a book and lyrics by George Haimsohn and Robin Miller.

The musical first opened in 1968 at Off-Broadway’s Bouwerie Lane Theatre, before transferring to the Theater de Lys (now known as the Lucille Lortel Theatre), where it ran for 575 performances.

Amongst the six actors in the original cast? A then-unknown Bernadette Peters.

Since its original run, “Dames at Sea” has gone on to become a staple in schools and community theaters across the country.

Three-time Tony nominee Randy Skinner (“42nd Street”) will direct and choreograph the Broadway production. It’ll be the first time “Dames at Sea” has ever been heard in New York with a full orchestra.

No casting has been announced for a Broadway run, but a January 2014 workshop included Tony nominees Laura Osnes (“Cinderella”) and Rachel York (“Dirty Rotten Scoundrels”).
