Christian Borle Will Lead ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' Musical on Broadway This Spring

A Wonka-sized musical is coming to Broadway.

Roald Dahl’s "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" will opens its doors to New York City this spring, in a new musical with a score from the "Hairspray" team of Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.

Performances begin at Broadway's Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on March 28, 2017, with an opening night set for April 23.

Headling the production as the mischievous chocolate maker is two-time Tony winner Christian Borle -- last of "Something Rotten."

It'll be a busy theater season for Borle. This fall, he'll also star in Lincoln Center's upcoming revival of William Flinn and James Lapine’s "Falsettos," alongside Andrew Rannells ("Hamilton," TV's "Girls") and Stephanie J.Block ("The Mystery of Edwin Drood").

"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" will reunite Shaiman and Wittman with "Hairspray" director Jack O'Brien. David Greg will adapt Dahl’s book for the stage, with Joshua Bergasse (NBC’s “Smash”) choreographing.

The new musical comes after an acclaimed run in London’s West End, which began in June 2013 and is slated to end in January 2017.

It tells the story of a young boy who wins the opportunity to tour the factory of world famous candy-maker Willy Wonka. Along the way, he meets a cast of characters as imaginative as Wonka’s world itself, including the iconic army of Oompa-Loompas.

Dahl’s book was first published in 1964, and has been adapted into two motion pictures: 1971’s Gene Wilder-led "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory" and 2005’s Johnny Depp-led "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory."
