A.R. Gurney's Comedy ‘Sylvia' Sets Broadway Closing Date

It’s a dog eat dog world out on Broadway, and it looks like “Sylvia” just couldn’t get a bone.

The Broadway revival of A.R. Gurney’s play, about a couple’s relationship with their new dog, will play its final performance at the Cort Theatre on January 3. At the time of its closing, it will have played 69 performances and 27 previews.

Directed by Daniel Sullivan, “Sylvia” stars a trio of Tony-winners: Matthew Broderick (“The Producers”), Julie White (“The Little Dog Laughed”) and “Annaleigh Ashford (“You Can’t Take it With You”). Robert Sella (“Chitty Chitty Bang Bang”) rounds out the cast, playing three unique characters of his own.

Despite opening to paw-sitive reviews, “Sylvia” couldn’t keep up with the competitive season, bringing in roughly 35% of its potential gross last week, according to numbers reported by the Broadway League.
