Tony-Winning Revival of ‘The Color Purple' to Close in January

John Doyle's Tony-winning revival of "The Color Purple" will play its final performance at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on Jan. 8, 2017.

Upon closing, it will have played 33 previews and 449 regular performances.

An adaptation of Alice Walker's 1982 novel and subsequent 1985 film, the musical stars Tony winner Cynthia Erivo as Celie — a woman who overcomes unimaginable tragedies on her journey to self-worth.

"Orange Is the New Black" star Danielle Brooks and Tony winner Jennifer Holliday also star. It's Holliday's first Broadway musical in 15 years after a battle with Multiple Sclerosis that left her temporarily blinded and paralyzed.

The production transferred from Doyle's 2013 mounting at London's Menier Chocolate Factory, led by Erivo.

A national tour of the musical is being planned to launch in the fall of 2017.
