The Public Theater Brings Back “Here Lies Love”

If you missed the critically acclaimed hit musical “Here Lies Love” during its 2013-run at The Public Theater, you’re in luck! According to an email from creator (and Talking Heads frontman) David Byrne to mailing list subscribers, “Here Lies Love” will return to The Public Theater for an open-ended run this spring. Opening night is slated for March 31.

“Here Lies Love” follows the life of First Lady of the Philippines Imelda Marcos, retracing her rise to power and descent to disgrace at the end of the People Power Revolution. The original production at The Public Theater, directed by Alex Timbers (“Rocky,” “Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson”), was an 90-minute theatrical experience, set within a disco club environment that had the audience standing and dancing along with actors.

Byrne wrote the music and lyrics to “Here Lies Love,” collaborating with Fatboy Slim on the former. Tom Gandey and J Pardo provided additional music.

For their new run, Byrne said “Here Lies Love” will return to the 3rd floor space at The Public that was formerly the Astor Library. Now dubbed the LuEsther, Bryne promised, “there will be improvements – better visuals all around and drinks after!” No casting or ticket information has been provided at this time.

To coincide with the opening, Bryne and Nonesuch Records are jointly putting out a cast recording. “It doesn’t sound like any cast album you’ve ever heard,” said Byrne, “with seven new songs since the last iteration of the project.” No release date for the cast album has been released either.
