Moon Over the Sequoia Dark Sky Fest Events

The 2000-Foot Solar System Walk is one highlight of this astronomy-packed party

BIG TREES, BIG SKY: When you hear that a festival will involve two main components, and those components could factually be described as "colossal," you can get a little lost, in a lovely way, in the enormity of it all. Take the annual Dark Sky Festival at Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. The "largest night sky festival in Central California" will take place on Friday, Aug. 23 and Saturday, Aug. 24, and if you're super into the sequoia scene, and you obsessed with the stars above, that might be all you need to hear before immediately booking a place to stay and packing your bag. But don't fall too far under the spell of the universe above and those sky-reaching trees, for there are events to ponder, the sort of happenings you'll want to join at the 2019 festival.

THAT LIST? It's long for two days, so best get perusing soon. The 2000-Foot Solar System Walk absolutely intrigues. "If the sun were a large grapefruit in our model, the earth would be a grape seed fifty feet away, and there would not be much in between!" is the amazing word on this experience. There's also the opportunity to find out about "Astrophotography in the National Parks" as well as "All About Telescopes," if you've been thinking of buying one of your own. "The Lifecycle of a Star" is another must-do, if you've pondered this ponderous topic, and there's a Kidz Zone for the younger astronomy buffs in attendance.
