What to Know

  • Longtime understudies Andrew Chappelle, Austin Smith and Seth Stewart will rotate the roles
  • The news comes after original cast members Lin-Manuel Miranda, Phillipa Soo and Leslie Odom, Jr. departed the show
  • Javier Munoz took over for Miranda's title character Monday

Less than a week after original cast members Lin-Manuel Miranda, Phillipa Soo and Leslie Odom, Jr. departed "Hamilton," actor Daveed Diggs announced he will also be exiting the Tony-winning hip-hop musical.

The 34-year-old — a Tony winner for his take on the roles of Marquis de Lafayette/Jefferson — will play his final performance in the sold-out show on July 15.

While his parts are still being recast, longtime understudies Andrew Chappelle, Austin Smith and Seth Stewart will rotate the roles at Broadway's Richard Rodgers Theatre.

On Monday, Miranda's longtime understudy Javier Munoz took over for the title character the Pulitzer Prize winner had created on the page and stage. Munoz, who had been alternating the role since its off Broadway premiere at the Public Theater in last winter, worked closely with Miranda in workshops to create the role.

Newcomer Lexi Lawson also stepped in for Soo on Monday, playing Eliza Hamilton. Tony nominee Brandon Victor Dixon will take over for Odom, Jr.'s Aaron Burr in a few weeks, after his current gig in "Shuffle Along" ends upon its July 24 closing.

News of Diggs' exit came tied in the announcement that Miranda's former co-star Karen Olivo will headline the Chicago production of "Hamilton" as Angelica Schuyler. The Tony-winning "In the Heights" veteran will be joined by Miguel Cervantes ("If/Then") as Alexander Hamilton, Wallace Smith ("Godspell") as Hercules Mulligan/James Madison, Ari Afsar (TV's "American Idol") as Eliza Hamilton and Alexander Gemignani ("Violet") as King George III, among others.
