Stevie Wonder Named U.N. Peace Messenger

Blind music legend to advocate for people with disabilities

Stevie Wonder is set to take his innervisions global for the U.N.

The blind music legend and noted philanthropist has been named a United Nations Messenger for Peace and will advocate for people with disabilities, about 10 percent of the world's population, The Associated Press reported.

He follows in the footsteps of such past famous U.N. peace messengers as Michael Douglas, primate researcher Jane Goodall and Nobel Prize-winning author and Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel, according to the AP.

"Our newest Messenger of Peace is someone who is admired by millions of people and has given back to millions of people," U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said ahead of Wonder’s official designation later today.

In February, President Obama awarded Wonder the nation’s top prize for pop music.
