When it comes to parenting her 17-month-old daughter Naleigh, Katherine Heigl says a mother's instinct is always better than dad's.

"We actually sort of fight over it," Katherine said during an appearance on the "Late Show with David Letterman" on Thursday when asked about making parenting decisions with husband Josh Kelley.

"I think it's a mother's thing to decide these things, I do. I think he should just listen and do it," she proclaimed with a laugh. "He got really mad at me for suggesting that the other day. I was like, 'But, don't you get it? Why are we fighting about what she should eat? I know! I have an instinct! It's universally called a mother's instinct!'"

The 31-year-old actress admitted she might have a difficult time with sharing parental duties, adding, "I think I'm a little bit of a control freak."

Katherine also noted that her daughter has forever changed her.

"Being a mother and being parents is this whole new world and everybody says your life's going to change and nothing will be the same. I feel like we've always had her, like she's always been a part of our family. It doesn't feel unusual. What's unusual is emotional change," she explained. "Gradually I started to feel like – it's a hard thing to describe – like you're wearing you're heart on the outside of your body for the rest of your life."

As previously reported on AccessHollywood.com, the actress revealed in the June issue of Harper's Bazaar that Naleigh had a heart problem which has since been surgically repaired.

"Her heart is 100 percent fine now. She has a scar, so she won't be wearing bikinis, which is fine by us," Katherine told the mag. "A lot of children don't find forever homes because they're on that special-needs list, even if it's because of something as simple as her mother smoked cigarettes for a month, not knowing she was pregnant. That's not so huge that you couldn't handle it."
