Michael C. Hall last tread the boards as the flamboyant title character in the hit revival of “Hedwig and the Angry Inch.” And now the actor will return to the New York stage, stepping into the shoes of another flamboyant character: David Bowie.
Hall will lead the cast of “Lazarus,” the new musical inspired by Walter Tevis’ 1963 novel “The Man Who Fell to Earth.” Hall will play Thomas Newton, the alcoholic alien inventor portrayed by Bowie in the cult 1976 film adaptation.
Bowie is heavily involved in “Lazarus,” creating the show alongside “Once” scribe Enda Walsh. The musical will feature a score of his classics, as well as original tunes the Grammy winner composed specifically for the show.
Performances begin Nov. 18 at the New York Theatre Workshop, with an opening night scheduled for Dec. 7.
Ivo van Hove will direct the production. Before that, he’ll direct a revival of “A View From the Bridge” for Lincoln Center.
Hall made his Broadway debut in 1999, stepping into the role of the Emcee in Sam Mendes’ famed revival of “Cabaret.” In addition to “Hedwig,” he has appeared on Broadway in 2014’s “The Realistic Joneses,” and as Billy Flynn in “Chicago.”
Hall is best known for his roles on the small screen, in “Six Feet Under” and “Dexter.”
