Spike Lee Iconic Film Heading to Netflix as Contemporary TV Series

Lee created this Netflix series and is set to direct it

Thirty years after its release, "She’s Gotta Have It" will be recreated for a 10-episode Netflix series. Spike Lee’s debut 1986 film, regarded as one of the most groundbreaking independent films of the 1980s, will come to Netflix in a recently announced deal.

Lee created this Netflix series and is set to direct. He is also the executive producer for the project, alongside his producer wife Tonya Lewis Lee.

"'She’s Gotta Have It' has a very special place in my heart,” Lee said in a statement to Deadline. "This is the first official Spike Lee feature film joint and everything that we have been blessed with in this tough business of film all have been due to SGHI."

The Netflix series will be a "contemporary update" of the original film, which just saw its 30th anniversary on Aug. 8. At the time of its release, it grossed $7,137,502 in the U.S. box office. In his statement regarding the new Netflix series, Lee reminisced on how he shot the film in two weeks on a limited budget "in the back of the hot summer of 1985." The film focuses on Nola Darling, a Brooklynite in her late twenties, trying to juggle friendships, a job and her love life.

"We are hyped that Netflix is on board with this vision as Nola Darling, Mars Blackmon, Jamie Overstreet and Greer Childs do da damn thang now, today in da republic of Brooklyn, New York," Lee said.
