This Is the Real Island Where the Final Scene of ‘Star Wars' Was Filmed

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" may be an intergalactic adventure, but many of its filming locations are very real and hoping to attract fans as visitors – In particular, one Irish island where the movie’s final scene was shot.

Discover Ireland, a tourism site for the country, released a “Behind the Scenes” promotional video on Monday showing the film's director J.J. Abrams and crew on the island of Skellig Michael off the southwest coast of the mainland.

Tommy Harper, an executive producer for the blockbuster, recalled Abrams' reaction when production designer Rick Carter emailed photos of Skellig Michael island covered in lush greens, jagged rocks, and ancient-looking stairs.

“J.J. immediately wrote back and said, ‘I love you. This is the best,'" Harper said.

The island ended up being the backdrop for a key meeting between two characters. Spoiler alert: See which scene it was at the bottom of this article.

According to IMDb, other filming locations included Iceland, Abu Dhabi, and various parts of England and Scotland.

For Abrams, having real locations which matched the fantastic nature of the film was key to his directorial vision.

“When I saw 'Star Wars' for the first time, it was all practical and real. You knew it when you saw the movie,” said director J.J. Abrams in the video. “So I felt that the standard had to be authenticity. The standard had to be reality.”

Spoiler: The scene at Skellig was the site of the film's climax, where the protagonist Rey finally meets Luke Skywalker.
