Roman Polanski to Attend Polish Court Hearing Over His Extradition

A lawyer for Roman Polanski says the filmmaker will attend a Polish court hearing concerning a U.S. request for his extradition over a 1977 sex crime.

Grazyna Rokita, spokeswoman for the regional court in Polanski's childhood city of Krakow, said Tuesday that the court will hear the case on Feb. 25.

His lawyer Jan Olszewski said the 81-year-old director will be in court. Polanski is in Poland preparing to make a film.

Even if the court rules that Polanski should be extradited, the justice minister can approve or reject the decision.

Born to Polish-Jewish parents, the Oscar-winning Polanski is a celebrity in Poland and officials have indicated reluctance to have him extradited.

Prosecutors have refused a U.S. request to arrest him, but see no legal obstacles to the extradition.
