Ellen & Portia: ‘We Go Back & Forth' On Having Kids

Now that they’re married, Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi are looking forward to life as a family – and the possible pitter-patter of little feet.

“We go back and forth,” Portia said to People about having kids. “I don’t know if it’s in our immediate future. It’s something we talk about every few months. We’ll know when the time is right if we’re going to do it.”

“It’ll be pretty obvious to both of us,” Ellen added. “It’s something we would never take lightly and just saying, ‘That would be fun.’ It’s a lot of work and we recognize that. In a way, we want to be selfish because we love our life, but we know how much that adds to it… If they would be as pretty as Brad and Angelina’s kids we might.”

But by their 25th anniversary, the couple plans to be raising something, even if it’s not their own children.

“We want a big farm and to just take care of every kind of animal that needs taking care of,” Ellen said.

An animal helped Ellen stage a romantic proposal when Portia rescued a goldfish from a TV shoot and brought it home.

“We were watching the fish and she said, ‘This is a pretty romantic moment, right?’ And I said, ‘Every moment with you is romantic,’” Portia said. “And then she gave me the ring.”

That ring, and the proposal, came in the wake of the California Supreme Court’s ruling allowing same-sex marriages.

“[Getting married] is not something we’ve ever taken for granted,” Portia told People. “That we get to do this, it means a lot.”

Though the couple’s been together since 2004, Ellen says the joy of married life has been a surprise.
