The "Dancing" pro's possible "Footloose" role comes on the heels of news that he and fellow pro, Mark Ballas – who both make up the Ballas Hough Band – could be leaving their hit ABC show to pursue other projects.

"Mark and I might not be back. We have other things going on," Derek told Malkin on Tuesday. "There's a bunch of stuff on the table right now. And we're going on tour this summer."

According to Malkin, "Gossip Girl" star Chace Crawford is the frontrunner to play Ren, who Bacon made famous in the original film.

Zac Efron was originally slated to play the lead but pulled out in April, telling Entertainment Weekly, "I'm sure 'Footloose' would have been a huge challenge, but, the actors that I love and the actors that work really hard in this industry are always shaking things up, trying new genres, acquiring new skill sets. That's what's always going to appeal to me: the unknown."
