With a second Academy Award for the mantle and two films already wrapped, actor Sean Penn is taking a break from show business.

Academy Award-winning actor Sean Penn has dropped out of two productions, "Cartel" and "The Three Stooges," "to focus on his family," reports Variety.

However, a spokesperson for the actor said that if films were postponed, Penn would be available later.

Penn and wife Robin Wright Penn filed for divorce in December of 2007, but have since dismissed the petition.

However, a number of online writers are connecting the dots between the announcement and a recent gossip item in the New York Post, in which an unnamed actor was taking a break not for family time, but to enter a rehab facility for substance abusers.

Penn is certainly no stranger to booze-fueled nights out on the town. And in some freelance reporting for the San Francisco Chronicle in Iraq, he repeatedly mentioned drinking and taking prescription sleep aid Ambien.

Of course, the actor's mercurial ways haven't gotten the better of demand for his work, especially after his most recent star turn in Harvey Milk biopic Milk won him another golden statue.

Jackson West has heard at least two second-hand stories of a soused and sassy Penn out on the town in San Francisco in the last few years.
