Parents Television Council Spreading ‘90210' ‘Gossip'

The Parents Television Council is spreading “Gossip” about “90210.”

The watchdog group warned advertisers on Tuesday about committing to the new “90210” based its network’s racy history with “Gossip Girl,” according to E!

“I think it’s fair to say that The CW has been a bad actor, particularly when it comes to ‘Gossip Girl,’” Dan Isett, director of public policy for the PTC, told E!

No advance copies of “90210” episodes have been released or screened, making the group’s criticism of the show an educated guess.

“We haven’t assumed anything about the show,” Isett said. “But I think that The CW has already demonstrated that they’ll stoop to any level in a rather desperate attempt to build buzz. It stands to reason ‘90210’ is going to be a similar type show.”

“Gossip Girl” caught the attention of critics thanks to its provocative “OMFG” ad campaign, which depicted actors from the show on billboards in suggestive positions. The show’s current campaign — full of similarly heated imagery – has responded by turning the critics’ own words against them, quoting choice lines like “Every parent’s nightmare” in the advertisements.

The promotional campaign for “90210” has been considerably less confrontational, but if actress Jessica Stroup has anything to say about it, the shows may soon share more than a network.
