Martha Stewart as Punching Bag

Domestic diva to be mocked by her own daughter

After serving time under house arrest, even televised ridicule from your own daughter is easy to take for Martha Stewart. The omnipresent persona behind Martha Stewart Omnimedia is the subject of a new show titled "Whatever, Martha!" to air on the Fine Living Network this fall. The premise is a simple post-modern one: making fun of Martha Stewart as she hosts her own self-titled show. Stewart's own daughter Alexis and a co-host, Jennifer Koppelman Hutt, will offer acerbic commentary at her mother's expense as they serve as a peanut gallery watching old episodes of her show "Martha Stewart Living." If the premise sounds familiar, it's because it was lifted by Martha Stewart herself from "Mystery Science Theater 3000," which featured a host and two companion robots critiquing old sci-fi films. "Whatever, Martha!" is an opportunity for Stewart to appeal to a younger audience. “I take what I do very seriously, and I think there is a lesson to be learned in every segment. But contrary to popular opinion, I do have a sense of humor,” she told The New York Times. Her publicist, charged with protecting her client's image, was less enthusiastic about the premise, responding frequently “Oh, my God. Please tell me this is not happening,” as the Times described the show's premise.
